Punjab Irrigation and Power Minister Rana Gurjit Singh today asked his department's officials to use modern information technology for reviewing and monitoring various projects including running of canals, to bring transparency in its working.
He said that making the irrigation water available to the farmers at the tail ends shall remain the highest priority of the department.
Reviewing the irrigation works in a meeting with senior officials and engineers of the department here, Singh directed the officials to add maximum value to their work in terms of quality and quantity while ensuring that all projects are completed on time.

He also directed the officials to ensure judicious use of canal water and emphasised on the optimum utilisation of irrigation water by lining the water channels and replace the open water channels with underground pipe system, an official spokesman said.
The minister expressed concern over the depleting water table in the state and asked the engineers to prepare a comprehensive plan to recharge the sub-surface water, he said.
"In order to safeguard and promote fishery especially the rare species, the government would allow the use of state reservoirs in consultation with the Department of Fisheries," Singh said.
