Punjab Police, health dept join hands for mentally ill people

Punjab Police and state's Department of Health and Family Welfare have come together to identify and provide help to mentally challenged people left out in the cold weather.

With the assistance from PGIMER here, they have decided to launch a co-ordinated campaign to help vulnerable persons by getting them admitted in the Institute of Mental Health, Amritsar, an official release said.

Punjab DGP Sumedh Singh Saini directed field officers to accord top priority to the well being of such persons and tie up with health officials to extend them all necessary help, especially in these extreme winter conditions.

Addressing a special session here on the Role of Police' in implementing the Mental Health Act (1987), he asked them to coordinate with the managements of social and religious organisations and non-government organisations for taking care of such persons.
 

Principal Secretary Health and Family Welfare, Punjab, Vini Mahajan sought cooperation of state police department for effective implementation of the Mental Health Act.
