A senior Punjab Police officer, who was posted here, has been arrested after he allegedly fired gun shots at a youth, injuring him critically, following an argument in Keshav Puram area of North West Delhi.

The accused officer, Narendra, Assistant Commandant 5th IRBn, Punjab Police, was deployed at Punjab Bhavan in the national capital.

The incident took place last night when Narender was passing through Ram Pura Colony and inquired about an address from three youths who were walking with their pets, police said.

In their police complaint, the youths alleged that Narender wanted to know some address and they informed him about that, but the officer, who was in an inebriated state, started scolding them saying they were lying to him.

The argument soon turned ugly and in a fit of rage Narender pulled out his service pistol and shot two bullets which hit one of the youths on his chest, police said.

The youth, Arun, who received two gun shots, is battling for his life in a city hospital.

Narender was overpowered by Arun's friends and passersby. A PCR call was made to inform the police about the incident and Narender was apprehended, police said.

"We have registered an FIR of attempt to murder under section 307 against him at the local police station. His service pistol from which the shots were fired has been seized," a police official said.
