Punjab's automated driving test and training centre set up at Naruana is proving to be a boon for the people within a short span of time.

At the centre, after passing tests, one can get a permanent licence in 40 minutes and the learning licence in 50 minutes.

Punjab Transport Minister Ajit Singh Kohar said here today that since April 15, 2,876 permanent licences and 3,559 learning licences have been issued.

He said that using the latest technology available, drivers of two-wheeler and four-wheeler vehicles are tested.

Earlier people used to face a lot of problems while getting their driving licences issued.

Kohar said that the applicant first has to get himself or herself registered and then pay an online fee, for which three counters have been laid.

Thereafter, the applicants undergo health check-up on the spot. The applicants are given a touch screen tablet in which they take test on question regarding driving and road safety.

At last the applicant has to drive the kind of vehicle he or she has applied for. For the four wheelers the track's terrain has been given hilly and slope touches to enable the applicants to drive on all kind of terrain, he said.

The track is spread in 1.25 acres of land.

He said that after passing the test, applicants are provided permanent licences within 40 minutes and learning licences within 50 minutes.

Giving yet another facility to the applicants, people are issued smart card-based driving licences on the spot.

To approve all the documents, the additional DTO sits at the centre enabling people to get the card duly approved and signed.

He added that the Punjab government has signed an agreement with the Maruti-Suzuki conglomerate that will set up its driving training institute and impart new drivers training to drive properly.
