Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri today pitched for recycling and using construction and demolition (C&D) waste, the disposal of which has become a "major concern", in manufacturing building components.

He said such wastes are used and recycled in many developed countries and India has also taken "significant initiative" by setting up two C&D waste processing plants Delhi and one in Gujarat.

"There is also pressing need for spreading awareness about the problem of waste management and the necessity to adopt proper procedure of collection, processing, recycling and use of C&D wastes in manufacturing of building components among different stakeholders," Puri said at an event here.

The minister noted that with rapid urbanisation and implementation of government's schemes like Smart Cities and Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY), there will be increased activities in the construction sector in the future.

"Disposal of C&D wastes has become a major concern in recent years," he said, adding often it is seen that such wastes are "improperly and illegally" disposed of, causing various problems.

Noting that sustainable waste management is the "need of the hour", he said, the fundamental objective should be to "maximise re-use and recycling" so that minimum land space is occupied for disposal.
