Local Congress units of Etawah, Mainpuri and Kannauj, considered to be strongholds of the Samajwadi Party, today advocated fielding of party candidates from these constituencies in upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Failure to put up candidates on these seats will demoralise party workers, the local units informed Madhusudan Mistry, newly-appointed in charge of party's affairs in Uttar Pradesh.

This was stated by UPCC president Nirmal Khatri while talking to reporters here.

The local party workers also complained to Mistry that even ministers and Congress MPs do not visit these districts.

This had left party activists disheartened, they told the in-charge of party's affairs in the state.

The UPCC chief said Mistry told the workers of Etawah and Mainpuri not to get disheartened and work towards strengthening the party.

Asked whether the party would contest from these seats, Khatri said personally he favoured Congress putting up its candidates from there.

"This is my personal view. A final decision in this regard will be taken by the party High Command," he said.

In 2009 Lok Sabha polls, the Congress had not fielded candidates on Etawah, Kannauj, Mainpuri and Firozabad seats.
