Puthur Archbishop resigns on health grounds

: Syro Malankara catholic church's Puthur Archbishop Geevarghese Mar Divannasios has demited office on health grounds.

He was the first Archbishop of Puthur dioceses, formed in Jan 25, 2010 and was at the helm for seven years.

The archbishiop was undergoing treatment and had been advised rest, a church press release today said.

Vicar General Dr George Kalayil has been appointed administrator by the Major archbishop Cardinal Mar Baselious Cleemis.

Pope Francis has also given the approval for the Archbishop's resignation, the release added.

The Puthur dioceses, carved out with the northern parts of the territory of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Eparchy of Bathery, is the first Syro-Malankara diocese in Karnataka and has 22 churches under it spread across the civil districts of Dakshina Kannada, Udupi, Kodagu, Hassan, Chikmagalur, Mandya, Mysore, Shimoga and Chamarajanagar.
