An additional chief engineer of the Public Works Department (PWD) was detained here for allegedly taking a bribe of Rs 5.25 lakh, an Anti-Corruption of Bureau (ACB) official said Wednesday.

Acting on a tip-off, the accused officer posted at the PWD in Ajmer was detained by sleuths of the Anti-Corruption of Bureau while he was on his way to Jaipur on Tuesday, he said.

A briefcase having cash worth Rs 5.25 lakh was seized from his car, Additional Superintendent of Police Chandra Prakash Sharma said.

He said the officer could not give satisfactory answers when asked about the unaccounted money following which he was detained.

Apparently, the accused has taken the money from PWD contractors to pass the work bills. The matter is being investigated, he added.
