Seeking to provide facilities to pedestrians and motorists and lend a greater aesthetic appeal to the city, the government is planning to install street furniture along the streets.

As per the plan, street furniture - installations of benches, dust bins, information boards, toilets, information boards, vending kiosks - will be set up along all the 1,200 km roads of the Public Works Department (PWD).

Government would soon identify locations where the street furniture will be installed.

"Government will give priority to such locations including tourist destinations, main markets and places of high footfall," a senior government official said.

The move seeks to not only beautify the capital's roads, but also provide facilities to pedestrians and motorists.

During the 2010 Commonwealth Games, several street furniture were installed near the gaming venues, but are currently in a "bad condition" and most of them reportedly "got stolen".

"We are planning to install street furniture along the PWD roads. As per plan, sitting chairs, vending kiosks others will be installed," PWD Minister Satyendra Jain said.

According to the official, 1,200 km roads come under the ambit of PWD and street furniture will be installed in a phased manner in the capital.

"By the installation of street furniture along roads, it would provide facilities to pedestrians and motorists. Besides, the PWD's roads will also look beautiful," the official said.

In recent past, pledging to make Delhi a world-class city, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal had said that steps would be taken to turn the city into a "tourism hub" on par with developed global cities.

"It would be our objective to make Delhi a hub for tourism. It would magnify not only the pride of Delhi, but it would also create the job opportunities," Kejriwal had said.
