In order to ensure safety of women in the national capital, the Public Works Department of the Delhi government would take the work of lighting up 'dark spots' in areas of North and East Delhi in the next three-four days.
A senior government official said North Delhi Municipal Corporation and East Delhi Municipal Corporation recently gave No Objection Certificate to the PWD and therefore 'dark spots' in the areas under their jurisdictions would be lit up.
The South MCD is, however, yet to give NOC to PWD.
According to the department, 7,340 dark spots will be lit up with as many LED lights in NDMC area and for this work, PWD would install 3,686 new poles.
In EDMC area, 124 such spots have been identified where 124 LED lights will be installed at 82 new poles.
"The Delhi government has set aside Rs 20 crore for lighting up dark spots in NDMC area while such spots which fall under the jurisdiction of EDMC will be lit up at a cost of Rs 50 lakh. In next seven-eight days, both projects will be completed," the official also said.
In October last year, the Arvind Kejriwal government had passed a proposal to lit up dark spots across the city.
"The PWD has been asked to identify all dark spots in Delhi, as soon as possible, and also identify spots where street lights are not present and places where they are installed but are not working," government had said last year.
