Press Trust of India Coimbatore
: Prices for good quality Turmeric would hover around Rs 7,500 to Rs 8,100 per quintal during September-October and farmers are advised to take their selling decision accordingly,

The Agro Marketing Intelligence and Business Promotion Centre in Tamil Nadu Agricultural University arrived at this decision after its econometric analysis on prices in Erode Regulated Market for the last 19 years.

The analysis revealed post-harvest losses and weevil infested rhizome were prime reasons for price reduction and proper storage of turmeric will avoid quality deterioration and also stabilize the price with better export prospects.

The prevailing price for good quality turmeric is Rs 6,800 to rs.7,500l in Erode.

In India, turmeric was cultivated in an area of 2.37 million hectares with a production of 11.90 million tonnes in 2013-14, which was 18 per cent higher than last year.

Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Odisha, Maharashtra, Karnataka and West Bengal are the major turmeric producing States, contributing 80-85 per cent of total production of the country, the analysis said.

In Tamil Nadu, turmeric is cultivated in 0.76 million hectares with 4.62 million tonnes of production in 2013-14, with Erode, Salem, Dharmapuri and Namakkal being the major producing districts.

At present, arrivals are of poor quality as harvested turmeric was damaged due to intermittent rains and also it was traded at lower price due to poor quality, coupled with the adequate stocks, the Centre said.
