The Gujarat High Court today asked the state CID to submit a progress report on the investigation into custodial death of a youth here during the Patel community's agitation for quota in August and directed the investigating officer to remain present before it on October 28.

The directive was issued by justice J B Pardiwala while hearing the petition filed by Prabhaben Patel whose son Swetang died in police custody.

Indicating that it might monitor the probe, the court asked the investigating officer to be present with a brief affidavit on the progress of probe.

Prabhaben's petition expresses dissatisfaction about the probe by CID-Crime and seeks transfer of the case to some independent agency. CID is only trying to save the guilty policemen, it alleges.

Swetang was picked up by the police in Bapunagar area here on August 25 when violence gripped the city and other parts of the state after the mega-rally of Patel community. The next morning he was declared dead.

On an earlier petition by Prabhaben alleging that her son died due to the beating in the custody, the HC had said that prima facie it was a case of homicide, and ordered the CID probe.
