Eminent santoor artiste Pandit Tarun Bhattacharya has composed a new raga 'Ganga' to air concern about increasing pollution to the holy river.

"The Ganga is our lifeline and epicentre of our civilisation but often we see Ganga water is getting polluted. In some places sewage water is being channelised into our sacred river," Pt Bhattacharya said at the launch of the audio CD 'Ganga' here last evening.

The CD, containing the new raga composition, was launched by legendary Hindustani classical music exponent Girija Devi.

"I have tried to voice the concern for the river through my raga," Pt Bhattacharya said.

The 88-year-old Girija Devi (88) said, "I am very happy that a new raga 'Ganga' has been composed by Pt Tarun Bhattacharya. I am praying to Lord Viswanath that a raga, bearing the name of Ganga, is accepted by people. The river Ganga has been part of the psyche of millions of Indians for ages."

GIMA award winner Tabla maestro Pandit Prodyut Mukherjee has designed the rhythm and melodies of the album of Pt Bhattacharya.
