Amid rumblings in Punjab Congress, party Vice President Rahul Gandhi today held confabulations with senior party leaders of the state.

After a seven km 'padyatra' and meeting the families of two Sikhs who died in an alleged police firing on protestors at Behbal Kalan village here, Rahul remained closeted with party MP and former Chief Minister Amarinder Singh, state party chief Partap Singh Bajwa and CLP leader Sunil Kumar Jakhar among others at the circuit house here.

Former chief minister Rajinder Kaur Bhattal, party MP Ravnit Singh Bittu and Ambika Soni were also present in the meeting.

The parleys between Rahul and senior Punjab Congress leaders assumes significance in the backdrop of reports of infighting between Amarinder and Bajwa camps.

Amarinder Singh wants Bajwa's replacement ahead of 2017 assembly polls in the state.

Rahul is understood to have discussed about the unity among Punjab Congress rank and file, party sources said even as there was no official briefing regarding the meeting.

The leaders assured Rahul of remaining united to put SAD-BJP combine rule to an end.

SAD-BJP combine is going to complete its two consecutive terms in 2017 when the state assembly will go to polls.

Rahul Gandhi will stay at Bathinda during the night, party MLA Joginder Singh said adding that the party vice-president will meet the families of farmers who had committed suicide due to debt tomorrow in Bathinda before winding up his two-day tour to Punjab.
