With Rahul Gandhi's appointment as Congress president appearing imminent, the party's Gujarat unit chief, Bharatsinh Solanki, today said scores of party workers were in favour of Rahul's elevation as it was the "need of the hour".

"It is a strong sentiment among scores of Congress workers from Gujarat and other parts of the country that Rahul should take over as the party president to take on the dictatorial tendencies of the Centre and forces of communal polarisation and social division unleashed by the RSS.

"It is the need of the hour in the run-up to the crucial Assembly elections in five states, including Gujarat, next year," he said.

At today's Congress Working Committee (CWC) meeting in Delhi, in the absence of party chief Sonia Gandhi, the members unanimously voiced a "strong sentiment" for Rahul's elevation to the top post in the party for the first time.

"It seems that the stage is set for the elevation of Rahul Gandhi to the Congress president's post," Solanki said, referring to the development at the CWC meeting.
