Raids conducted in Chandigarh to check sale of polythene

Huge quantity of polythene/ carry bags were seized and challans were issued to shopkeepers during raids at several places in the city, conducted by the Chandigarh Administration today.

The raids were carried out to check illegal sale of banned polythene bags.

Several teams were formed which carried out raids at various places in the city including Sector-26 grain market, Manimajra, village Butrela, and Sectors-20, 41, 43, said an official release.

Huge quantity of polythene /carry bags were seized from various shops and wholesalers, it said adding that a total of 77 challans were issued to the shopkeepers, it said.

Officials appealed to the traders as well as general public to discourage the use of polythene/plastic bags, plates, glasses and other material made from plastic to make the city cleaner and garbage free.
 

On December 4, the National Green Tribunal had announced a fine of Rs 5,000 on anyone found using or dealing with plastic material in Chandigarh.

It had also slammed the Chandigarh administration and civic authorities for their lackadaisical approach in implementing the ban order on plastic.
