'Raijmel' at Sarthebari in Assam

The people of Sarukshetri in Barpeta district today gathered for 'Raijmel' (public meeting) for the 115th year against the increase of taxes by the Britishers.

The first 'Raijmel' was held on January 24, 1898.

The people gathered at Panigaon Tup, near Lachima in Sarthebari today and held Raijmel there to commemorate the event when on this day 114 years ago the people there had together protested against the increase of taxes by the British.

As per historical records the British had punished most of the people who came for the protest meeting and sent them to jail.

To observe the occasion the farmers of Sarthebari area hold 'Naam -Prasangas' (prayers).
