Concerned with hefty fuel costs, Railways Minister Suresh Prabhu today sought inputs from experts on ways to bring down the national transporter's energy bill by 20-25 per cent.

"How can Railways reduce the cost of its energy? ...Offer some ideas which would help me to prepare the Budget as well. Please think about it," Prabhu said at the 13th Petro India Conference, organised by India Energy Forum and ORF, here.

"If you can tell me, all of you put together, how can we reduce the cost of energy by 20-25 per cent for the Railways soon, I will be more than happy," he said.

The Minister asked them to send their suggestions within a week so that these "would help me to prepare the Budget as well."

Diesel and electricity are the major fuels for Railways. The Ministry has already started doing an energy audit to know the details of energy consumption and look at ways to reduce energy cost.

The Railways Ministry had sought suggestions from common people regarding the Railway Budget for the next fiscal and the deadline ends today.
