CBI has arrested an employee of South Central Railway for allegedly demanding and accepting bribe of Rs 3,40,000 for "arranging" job of locomotive pilot to a youth through his "good contacts" with senior officials.

The accused, identified as Mahbub Basha, a Goods Guard with SCR posted at Guntur, was arrested yesterday and the CBI seized some incriminating documents from his residential premises.

A case was registered against Basha by the Vizag office of the CBI, stated an agency release issued here today.

According to the release, Basha allegedly promised job of Assistant Loco Pilot to the complainant, an unemployed youth, and sought Rs 4 lakh as illegal gratification in October last year.

Basha convinced the youth that he enjoyed "good contacts" with senior railway officials, following which the father of the complainant gave a cheque of Rs 60,000 as "first instalment" to him.

However, he could not arrange the job he had promised and demanded balance of Rs 3.40 lakh from the complainant on February 23 to "process" his application.

"As the complainant was not willing to pay bribe, he and his father lodged a complaint with CBI, Visakhapatnam, and a trap was laid," stated the release.

Basha was was caught while accepting a cheque of Rs 3.40 lakh from the complainant at the office room of a ginning mill in Guntur.

A case was registered against Basha and further investigation is on.
