A railway official was arrested after he was caught red-handed today while allegedly accepting a bribe of Rs 15 lakh for clearing pending bills of Rs 1.5 crore, the CBI Anti-Corruption Bureau here said.
Contract works were recently awarded to a Tamil Nadu-based company for Rs 11 crore and a bill of approximately Rs 1.5 crore was pending clearance, it said in a release.
A discreet verification revealed that the official was allegedly indulging in corrupt practices and that he was allegedly actively involved in awarding contracts to various contractors after collecting huge bribe amount, it said.
The official allegedly demanded an illegal gratification of Rs 15 lakh for clearing the pending bills and the proprietor of the firm deputed his project manager to deliver the bribe amount.
A case was registered today and trap laid, it said, adding, the official was caught red-handed while accepting the bribe.
Both the official and the project manager were arrested, the release said.
