Railway officials were left red faced when a new escalator inaugurated with much fanfare at Mathura junction stopped midway due to a glitch while the Railway Board Chairman A K Mittal was on it during an inspection.

Mittal climbed the steps on the escalator and continued his inspection yesterday.

The escalator facility was inaugurated on May 28 by Minister of state for Railways Manoj Sinha to avoid inconvenience to women, children and physically handicapped, who otherwise had to climb the steep stairs.

During the inspection the escalator stopped functioning apparently due to a technical problem, officials said.

Agra divisional railway manager Prabhash Kumar said that the matter will be inquired into.

Mittal was here to take feedback of passengers on existing amenities provided by railways, including food services.

According to railway officials, the Board chairman also assured passengers to look into the possibility of starting a direct train from Mathura to Lucknow via Kasganj and Bareilly.
