The cause of the fire could not be immediately ascertained, they said.

"Two fire tenders were called to extinguish the fire and their timely arrival helped preventing more damage to railway property," they said.

At least 300 wooden sleepers for narrow gauze railway line connecting Joginder Nagar with Pathankot had been lying in the railway yard for over two months, they said.

The sleepers were charred in the sudden fire which is believed to have been caused by short circuit or burning cigarette or bidi thrown at them by some passenger, they said.
