The decision shocked scientists of the institute, who were the brain behind the seven-year-long project, a researcher of the institute said.
"Railways has scrapped the service of Satellite Imaging for Rail Navigation (SIMRAN), an ambitious project of Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur. Though, we requested Railway board to continue it but no response was received from them", Registrar, IIT, Kanpur RK Sachan told PTI here today.
The Railway administration had not disclosed the reason behind the termination, however a scientist, who was associated with the project said, Railway wanted to assign the project to its IT service unit, Central Railway Information System (CRIS).
