Expanding the use of IT applications, railways will soon launch a system to know the total earnings from passenger and freight on daily basis.

Earnings on daily basis will be compiled as part of the management information system to be launched shortly, Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu today said at an event here.

Currently daily earnings are available at zonal level and compiled for the entire railways on a periodical basis.

If there is a 95 per cent occupancy in a train then railways must have 95 per cent collection. So the compilation of earnings on daily basis will bring greater transparency in the system, he said.

MIS being developed by CRIS, railways technology arm, will cover the expenditure and punctuality aspects also.

"Diesel consumption on a particular day will also be known through the system," Prabhu said and added "the use of more and more ICT will make the system totally transparent.
