Railways has taken a serious note of the Supreme Court notice regarding the issue of sleeper coaches conforming to international safety standards and would take adequate safety measures, Railway Minister Mallikarjuna Kharge today said.

"We have taken note of the Supreme Court notice very seriously, adequate measures will be taken to improve the safety standards," Kharge told reporters after commissioning the newly laid railway line between Kottur and Harihar.

The Supreme Court had recently served notice on the Railways on a public interest petition seeking direction that sleeper coaches being manufactured conform to international safety standards.

Kharge today commissioned newly laid railway line between Kottur and Harihar, and flagged-off Harihar-Kottur passenger train at Kottur railway station.

The commissioning of this project has become a reality after 19 years for the people of Kottur.

The project has been implemented at a cost of Rs 425 crore with Railway and Karnataka government sharing the project cost.
