Railways working to attract more loadings: Board member

Amid the fall in freight, railways is working out on strategies to divert loadings from roads to rail.

"We are working on three strategies to perk up the loadings," said Railway Board Member (Traffic) Mohd Jamshed here at the conference on 'Challenges and Strategies for Indian Railways in the merging scenario' organised by the Centre for Transportation Research and Management here.

Addressing the delegates, Jamshed said they are working on expanding the freight basket of railways, rationalising the tariff structure and augmenting capacity to improve the Railways' share.

He said the freight rates in certain goods have been recently rationalised to increase volume in the loadings.
 

Highlighting the infrastructure augmentation work being undertaken, he said, "Railways has launched a massive programme to attract investment in capacity building exercise."

Chief Economic Advisor Arvind Subramanian in his keynote address spoke about recent economic measures taken by the government and role of Railways in the Indian Economy.
