Rains played spoilsport on the last day of campaigning for Maharajganj Lok Sabha by-poll leading to cancellation of election meetings of Chief Minister Nitish Kumar and other leaders.

Kumar's election meeting at Bhagwanpur in Siwan was cancelled due to rain since yesterday.

However, the CM arrived at Bhagwanpur from night halt at Chhapra and addressed workers and locals at the JD(U) office there.

Kumar is scheduled to address three more public meetings in the day but there was little chance of it in view of rains, a Siwan report said.

The CM is criss-crossing the Maharajganj Parliamentary constituency for the past three days to drum up support for JD(U) nominee and State Education minister P K Shahi.

Downpour has also affected RJD President Lalu Prasad's schedule. Prasad for whom Maharajganj by-election is considered important to stage a comeback in state politics after humiliating defeat in last general elections and Assembly polls in 2010 has been in the constituency for the past one week for victory of RJD candidate Prabhunath Singh.

Congress leaders Sadanand Singh and Vijay Kumar Dubey election programmes have also been hit due to rain.

Maharajganj by-poll slated for June 2 is witnessing a triangular contest between JD(U), RJD and Congress.

Though outcome of the by-poll would not have much political impact, it would be an indicator which way the wind was blowing before crucial 2014 Parliamentary elections.
