Over 150 residents of Bharathi Nagar at Ramanathapuram here today staged a road blockade protesting 'failure' of the Corporation to take necessary steps to prevent rain and drainage water entering their houses during rains lashing the city for the last four days.

The residents, majority of them women, squatted on the road near Olympus, the junction on Tiruchirapalli Main road, blocking traffic around 8.30 AM, police said.

Heavy rains in the last four days, particularly during the evenings, inundated several low lying areas in the city, due to water overflowing from the drains, which were clogged.

The rain water mixed with drainage water entered some 200 houses at Bharathi Nagar last night and inmates were busy whole night draining it out, some residents said.

Some 50 protesters were removed from the spot but more replaced them, police said.

Corporation officials assured the protesters that steps would be taken to bail out the water from the houses following which they dispersed, police said.

Traffic was paralysed for nearly one hour due to the picketing, they added.
