The construction sector and the workers were seriously affected due to the recent rains and resultant floods in various parts of Tamil Nadu, AITUC Construction Workers Union State General Secretary K Ravi said today.

The builders and also the people, who had taken loans to construct the houses, were in trouble as the raw materials and other equipment were lost in the flood waters resulting in heavy loss to them, Ravi told reporters here.

Since there was a provision in the Construction Workers Welfare Board to provide compensation to labourers during the rainy season, the Government should announce Rs 10,000 to the workers in these rain-affected districts, he said.

Criticising the Centre for the failure to announce the floods in these districts as national disaster, Ravi said that the workers will be benefited once this was announced.

He also urged the State government to ensure proper supply of raw materials for the sector, which were totally lost in the rains.
