Thirteen people were killed after being struck by lightning in Uttar Pradesh as rains continued in several parts of north India today while the situation improved in flood-ravaged Jammu and Kashmir.
Several areas of Uttar Pradesh, Rajasthan, Punjab and Haryana received light to heavy rainfall since yesterday afternoon, following which the mercury remained at pleasant level, according to MeT reports.
In Jammu and Kashmir where flooding has claimed around 250 lives and inflicted heavy damages, the situation improved with waters receding in the absence of heavy rains in the past few days.
In Delhi, extreme humid conditions prevailed across the city though some areas received brief spells of rain.
While the observatories at Lodhi Road, Safdarjung, Palam, the Ridge and Ayanagar recorded nil rainfall, MeT stations at Delhi University, Akshardham and Sports Complex reported 2-mm, 1-mm and 4-mm rainfall, respectively.
The maximum temperature in the capital settled at a comfortable 33.6 degrees Celsius, while the minimum was two notches below the season's average at 23.0 degrees. Humidity fluctuated between 56 and 95 per cent, causing discomfort to the people.
In Uttar Pradesh, rains continued in several parts with at least 13 people being killed after lightning struck them in different areas since yesterday.
According to reports, four persons each died in Banda and Kanpur districts, three in Chitrakoot and one each in Bhadohi and Farrukhabad districts after being hit by lightning.
According to the Lucknow MeT office, Southwest Monsoon was active over Uttar Pradesh. Kaisarganj received 22-cm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, followed by Purwa 13-cm, Rae Bareli 11-cm, Kanpur 10-cm, Bahraich and Fursatganj 9-cm each, Pallia Kalan 8-cm, and Katerniaghat, Neemsar and Moradabad 7-cm each. Several others areas also received rain.
Monsoon rain also continued in Rajasthan. According to the MeT department, many places in Udaipur, Kota, Ajmer and Bharatpur divisions and a few places in Jodhpur and Jaipur divisions received light to moderate rainfall.
Heavy rains lashed isolated places in Jaipur, Bharatpur and Udaipur divisions. Vallabhnagar in Udaipur and Laxmangarh in Sikar districts recorded rainfall measuring 10-cm each, followed by Mandrayal (Karauli) 9-cm. Other places in the state recorded below 8-cm of rains.
