A fresh spell of moderate rain drenched Delhi on Saturday, providing much-needed relief from the sultry weather.
The weather stations at Palam, Lodhi Road and Ayanagar gauged 47.4 mm, 37.6 mm and 18.5 mm of rain.
Rainfall above 60 mm is categorised as 'heavy', between 15-65 mm as 'moderate' and between 1-15 mm as 'light', according to officials.
Kuldeep Srivastava, a senior scientist at the India Metereological Department, said a cyclonic circulation over Madhya Pradesh caused moisture-carrying easterly winds from the Bay of Bengal to blow towards the plains, leading to rains in the Delhi-NCR region.
The temperature had also increased over the last few days. All these factors were responsible for the fresh spell of rains, he said.
Srivastava said patchy rains would continue till September 20, but humidity levels will remain high.
On Saturday, Delhi recorded a high of 35.5 degrees Celsius, three notches above normal, and a low of 27.8 degrees Celsius. The humidity levels shot up to 98 per cent during the day.
