Rains drench Punjab, Haryana; temp falls

Rains lashed most parts of Punjab and Haryana on Saturday, bringing the maximum temperature in the region below normal.

Karnal and Amritsar received 58.2 mm and 13 mm of rainfall respectively, the Meteorological Department said.

Patiala, Ludhiana, Hisar and Ambala recorded 8.5, 12, 3 and 0.2 mm of rainfall respectively, it said.

Chandigarh, the joint capital of Punjab and Haryana, received 2 mm rainfall.

The humidity levels oscillated between 71 to 100 per cent in the region, the weather department said.

The maximum temperatures in the region fell one to three notches below normal, the MeT department said.

In Punjab, Amritsar recorded a high of 33.7 degrees Celsius -- a notch below normal, and Patiala recorded a maximum temperature of 33.6 degrees Celsius.

 

Narnaul and Hisar in Haryana recorded a maximum temperature of 35.5 degrees Celsius, followed by Ambala at 33.7 degrees Celsius -- a notch below normal and Karnal at 31 degrees Celsius -- three notches below normal.

The mercury settled at 33.3 degrees Celsius in Chandigarh, a notch below normal.

The rains inundated the low-lying areas and led to a flood-like situation in many parts of Bathinda, Tarn Taran, Sangrur, Patiala, Muktsar and Sirsa, officials said.

The weatherman has predicted light to moderate rains at several places in the region during the next 24 hours.
