Chennai denizens have cause to cheer as the water-starved city received rain over the past two days and indications are that more parts of Tamil Nadu are likely to experience showers in the next 48 hours.
The city experienced downpour Monday and meteorological department officials said around 4 cm rainfall was received at Nungambakkam, an observation centre, till 8 am Tuesday.
Chennai is likely to receive light to moderate rainfall in the next two days, the department said.
However, it pointed out that the city has not received its usual share from the south west monsoon.
Chennai receives much of its rainfall from the north east monsoon during October to December.
Isolated places in coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, and districts close to Western Ghats are likely to receive less to moderate rain in the next two days, the department said.
Area Cyclone Warning Centre Director N Puviarasan said in the next 48 hours rainfall in coastal districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry would be induced by "convection process."
"Wind convergence caused by south west monsoon is likely to bring rains to State districts close to Western Ghats," he told reporters here Wednesday.
According to him, isolated places over Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Villupuram, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Vellore, Thiruvannamalai, Theni, Nilgiris and Coimbatore districts are likely to receive heavy rains.
"Maximum and minimum temperatures in the next 48 hours is likely to be around 36 and 26 degrees Celsius respectively," he said.
