Raja Ravi Varma award for Balan Nambiar

Noted painter and sculptor Balan Nambiar has been selected for Kerala Government's prestigious Raja Ravi Varma award in recognition of his outstanding contribution in the field of art.

Announcing the award for the year 2014, Minister for Culture K C Joseph said the award carried a cash price of Rs 1.50 lakh, citiation and a plaque.

78-year old Nambiar, hailing from Kannapurm in Kannur district, had been the chairman of Lalit Kala Academy and a receipient of various national and international awards, an official release said here today.

He had researched and documented the ritual art forms of West Coast of South India, including the Teyyam of northern Kerala and the Bhuta of south Kanara, over the past three decades.
