Rajasthan's ruling BJP legislator Gyan Dev Ahuja today asked the home minister to initiate a probe against the Alwar superintendent of police for alleged corruption and took up the issue of law and order in the state.
Ahuja, the legislator from Ramgarh in Alwar, raised the issue during Question Hour in the Assembly.
Home Minister Gulab Chand Kataria said he had himself seen that the law and order situation in Alwar had improved.
Ahuja said he had already apprised the home minister and the state's top police officials of the SP's misconduct but nothing was done.
The legislator did not mention the police officer by name in the House.
Questioning the government on the law and order situation, he referred to an incident in Bharatpur district where an assistant sub inspector allegedly beat a woman.
I am not saying that the entire department is corrupt but there are some officials who need to be checked because corruption is not possible without the patronage of senior officials, Ahuja said.
Repeatedly questioned by Ahuja on whether the government would order a probe against the Alwar SP for corruption and misconduct, the home minister said no one could be held guilty just because of raised voices.
Kataria also assured the House that the government would spare no one found guilty. But for ordering a probe, written, detailed information against the officer was needed.
Replying to Ahuja's question on the number of policemen caught for accepting bribes, the minister informed the House that 200 police personnel had been arrested in cases of graft in the last four years, from 2014 to 2017.
There were 275 cases for graft registered in the state against policemen. Of these, 200 policemen were arrested in 171 cases.
According to Ahuja, most of those arrested were low rank policemen like constables, head constables, assistant sub inspector and sub inspectors.
He asked why senior officers like deputy SP or SP were not caught.
The minister then informed the house that action against Indian Police Service and Rajasthan Police Service officers were taken. Three IPS officers were also arrested and jailed in cases of corruption.
Congress whip Govind Singh Dotasara and others also cornered the state government on the issues raised by Ahuja.
