Upset over folk lyricists and singers "not getting recognition in Indian film songs", Rajasthani folk icon Mame Khan says there should be some copyrights over the desert land folk tunes.

Mame, who came to the city to attend the Roots Festival Sahaj Parav, told PTI, "I appreciate that they are retaining folk elements in songs but many a time there is no credit and I don't appreciate that."

"I would request the entire film industry, Bollywood as well as the Bangla film industry, to give reference to the folk singer, lyricist whose lines and 'gayaki' had been incorporated in a particular number in the titles," he said hinting at some past bitter experiences.

'Luck By Chance' and 'I am' crooner said folk songs cover the entire gamut of human emotions.

"I talk about folk heritage and culture of Mamgirah community but all folk songs refer to our rootedness," he said.

Acknowledging late Bhupen Hazarika's contribution in popularising folk songs to the present day Indians, Mame said, "Bohut achha music diya 'Rudali' film me. I wish could meet him one day."

Mame, whose musical career started in a medieaval village Satto near Jaisalmer, said he was in awe of Bengali folk singers including Parbati Baul. "I again heard her at Sahaj Parab festival. Bohut mithi swar hay unki," he said.

The Sahaj Parav, organised by singer Lopamudra Mitra, lyricist Joy Sarkar and folk-based Bangla Band Dohar's Kalikaprasad, also brought names like vocalist Subha Mudgal and Kailash Kher besides local legends Purnadas Baul.
