Rajkot police keeps identification rule in abeyance for now

On April 20, Johri issued a notification making it compulsory to carry identity proof at night. But local Congress leaders have opposed the rule, saying that it would only provide a new avenue to the police to extort bribes.

Johri's justification was that the rule would curb crime.

A senior police official today said that the notification has not been withdrawn, but a two months' "exemption" has been given.
