Rajnath steers clear of UP law & order issue

Home Minister Rajnath Singh today steered clear of queries on recent incidents of rape and communal violence in Uttar Pradesh, saying law and order is the primary responsibility of the state government and the Centre only provides assistance to deal with such matters.

"Law and order is state government's responsibility. Their responsibility is primary and final," he told reporters here when asked about incidents of rapes and riots in UP which have been latched on to by opposition parties in the state, including BJP, to attack the Samajwadi Party government.

The Home Minister said the central government's role is very limited in maintaining state's law and order situation.
 

"Our role is very limited. Whenever there is a need, we provide central armed police force to assist the local administration," he said.

Asked about the growing Naxal menace, Singh said a comprehensive action plan to deal with the Maoists is ready and will come into force very soon.

Referring to other internal security problems, the Home Minister said the NDA government would do its best to tackle menace like "Jehadi extremisim, Naxalism and insurgency".
