Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju today inaugurated the international air cargo complex at the airport here.

Spread over in an area of 674.64 sq meters including 120.06 sq meters open space, the new complex boasts of all required facilities.

"The facilities at the Vizag airport will be further upgraded and the upcoming greenfield airport in Vizianagaram will meet the future needs of the Vizag region. In the coming years, aviation sector will witness several changes and record growth," Raju said after the inauguration.

The minister said this is just the beginning and the Vizag airport will compete with Mumbai and Chennai airports in the coming years in handling air cargo in view of the vast potential of the area.

The NDA government has given a big boost to the civil aviation by emphasising on regional connectivity, particularly in Andhra Pradesh in the past three years, he said.

According to Raju, the AP government had given land for the extension of the runways at Vijayawada and Rajahmundry to facilitate the landing of bigger aircraft.

Admitting the delay in the project, Vizag Airport director G Prakash Reddy said the complex had all facilities and it expects to log good growth in cargo.
