Rajya Sabha today condoled the death of Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez, who lost his battle with cancer on Tuesday.

"President Hugo Chavez's indomitable spirit shone while dealing with challenging national issues as well as difficult personal circumstances. He always strived towards betterment of underprivileged masses," Chairman Hamid Ansari said as the House met for the day.

Ansari said India cherishes the special bond of friendship that was greatly strengthened during the charismatic leadership of Chavez.

The House, Ansari said, joins the leadership and the people of Venezuela in mourning the passing away of Chavez and conveys deep condolences to his family.

The members then stood up and observed silence as a mark of respect to the memory of the 58-year-old leftist.
