Commencing the arguments for framing of charges against the former minister and nine other accused, the CBI said Ramadoss decided to get Indore-based Index Medical College Hospital and Research Centre (IMCHRC) inspected by a central team despite the fact that the Centre had told the apex court that it would not grant permission to the college to admit students.
"The minister (Ramadoss) decided to constitute the central inspection team to inspect IMCHRC despite the fact that the Centre had told the Supreme Court that it will not give the permission to the college to admit students for the second batch on the basis of the Medical Council of India (MCI's) recommendation," CBI prosecutor V K Sharma told Special Judge Talwant Singh.
Ramadoss, who was the Union Minister of Health and Family Welfare from May 2004 to April 2009 in the UPA-I government, has been charge sheeted by the CBI for allegedly abusing his official position in allowing IMCHRC to admit students despite having no sufficient faculty members and clinical infrastructure in 2009.
Besides Ramadoss, the other nine accused in the case are Cabinet Secretariat Director K V S Rao, Ministry of Health and Family Welfare's (MHFW) Section Officer Sudershan Kumar and Dr J S Dhupia and Dr Dipendra Kumar Gupta of Safdarjung Hospital.
Accused Dr S K Tongia, former dean of IMCHRC, Medical Director of the college Dr K K Saxena besides Nitin Gothwal and Dr Pawan Bhambani are named as accused.
