Demanding release of their 54 colleagues arrested by the Sri Lankan Navy, fishermen in this coastal town today decided to indefinitely boycott fishing in protest over the incident.

Fishermen Association president N Devadoss said the strike would continue till the release of the fishermen, who were arrested for allegedly poaching in the island nation's waters off the coast of Kankesanturai and Talaimannar yesterday.

They asked Sri Lankan fishermen to cooperate with their Indian counterparts during the talks on March 24 and 25 in Chennai and hoped to arrive at an amicable solution on the vexed issue.

They also said that as per the agreement between the two countries, country boats should net fish for four days and the mechanised boats for three days.
