The district administration has decided to set up random check posts on the outskirts of the city, where there are a number of meat-processing plants, to check illegal trafficking of cattle.
"While random check posts would be set up on the outskirts of the city, special check posts, which already exist on the borders of the district would be made more effective to ensure that no illegal trafficking of cattle take place", Superintendent of Police, Mohit Gupta, said.
He said a monitoring system would also be set up to ensure that all meat plants follow regulations strictly and no unauthorised animal was slaughtered.
Gupta made it clear that no organisation would be allowed to take the law in its hand on the pretext of monitoring the transport of livestock.
There were recent reports that a local unit of a Hindu outfit had announced that it would be setting up its own check posts to monitor transport of cattle in the district and thwart any alleged trafficking of the same.
Yesterday, some local residents had clashed with a truck driver for allegedly unloading meat waste from one of the meat plants on the roadside.
