Chief Minister N Rangasamy today launched the Rs 1 41 crore free edible oil supply to card holders through ration shops in the Union Territory.
Speaking on the occasion he said that the government had all along been supplying two kilo wheat per card free of cost. Now it had been decided to replace the wheat by supplying half a litre of refined sunflower edible oil for every card every month.
He said that while 2.5 lakh families would be covered in Puducherry while it would cover 57 lakh families in Karaikal, 8000 in Mahe and 16,000 in Yanam regions. A release from office of Chief Minister said that the scheme would entail a monthly expenditure of Rs 1.41 crores to make available the edible oil.
Card holders would be issued retrospectively half a litre of oil from November, the release said.
