The daughter and son-in-law of Late Rani Vibha Singh, former chief of Shahgarh block under the Gauriganj Assembly segment in Amethi, today joined BJP in the presence of party nominee Smriti Irani.

Amita Singh and her husband Vinod Kumar Singh, a retired engineer, today joined the BJP after their long allegiance to the Congress.

Congress leaders said the duo's joining BJP would not affect the party's performance in Amethi, where party vice president Rahul Gandhi is seeking re-election.

"It won't affect the party. They no longer have any relation with Amethi," said district Congress leader Jogendra Mitra.

Meanwhile, Irani today started her campaign in the Amethi Lok Sabha constituency after offering prayer at a temple in Gauriganj.

Irani will file her nomination papers on April 17, BJP spokesperson Govind Chauhan said.

The actor-turned-politician expressed confidence that she will win from the Lok Sabha seat, where she is pitted against Congress's Rahul Gandhi and Aam Aadmi Party's Kumar Vishwas.

Chauhan said Irani will stay at a house provided by a party leader near BJP office to carry out her campaign effectively.
