Maharashtra Governor Ch Vidyasagar Rao today stressed on the need for doing a lot more to improve the ranking of Indian higher educational institutions and universities at the global level.

Speaking after inaugurating the residential campus of the Symbiosis International University near here, Rao said "In my capacity as Chancellor of 20 Universities in Maharashtra where 3 million students are pursuing higher education, I often wonder why our universities and colleges do not feature anywhere among the top universities in the world".

"A lot more needs to be done to improve the ranking of Indian institutions of higher learning and our universities at the global level. For this purpose, we will have to take the international rankings seriously and try to improve the ranking of our own institutions," Rao said, according to a release issued from the Raj Bhavan.

He said education has always been seen as an instrument of transformation for economic, social and political development of the country.

"Countries that invested in education, research, innovation and enterprise are reaping rich dividends. Indias time to invest in education and research is now," Rao said.

"As Chancellor of Universities in Maharashtra, I often attend Convocation Ceremonies and give away prizes and medals and majority of the girls students are gold medallists," he added.

"So, given a window of opportunity, women who are natural multi-taskers, have the potential to rise and excel in any field of their choice. However, when it comes to the job market or enterprises, the number of women drops considerably," Rao said.

He emphasised the need to change this scenario by creating more enabling atmosphere for women to participate in the process of nation building.

The perception of the world towards India has changed remarkably, Rao said adding India has emerged as the fastest growing economy in the world.
