Eminent scientist and Bharat Ratna C N R Rao today said he was hopeful that nano science and technology would yield good research work in the country.

After US and China, India is third in the world in terms of publication of scientific research papers on nano science and technology, Rao said, adding, he hopes there would be much better and higher quality work.

"I am sure that India will contribute in pushing the frontiers of knowledge in nano science and technology," Rao, who is Chairman of Scientific Advisory Council to the Prime Minister, said.

Stating that India started from zero in the field of nano science and was now doing so well, Rao lauded the Union government for creating Nano Mission and said improvement being seen in this field of science shows that targeted funding in well identified areas yielded results.

The subject of nano science and technology is expanding and it is no more as simple as it used to be, he said asking scientists to ensure research done was in line with the progress being made in the subject internationally.

"Now onwards we need to be little selective. In future we want to be selective and focus on energy research, tissue engineering and biomedical engineering," Rao said.

In these fields, technology can make a big contribution, he added.

Rao was speaking after inaugurating International Conference on Nano Science and Technology (ICONSAT) being held at the Panjab University (PU) here.

The three day conference is the sixth biennial international conference, which is being sponsored by Nano Mission, the Department of Science and Technology, India.

The conference is being organized by Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali. A number of noted national and international nanotechnology scientists and experts are participating at the international event.
