A police inspector, arrested and suspended for allegedly molesting and raping two minor girls, escaped from police custody today.

"The accused, Nurul Islam, managed to flee from the police custody when he was being taken to Tura, a nearby district headquarters," Deputy Commissioner Ram Singh said.

"Islam was arrested and suspended last night for molesting and raping two minor sisters twice inside Ampati police station when he was the in-charge there in March," Singh said.

While a magisterial inquiry was set up and Additional District Magistrate M P Sangma will submit a report within a week, action was taken against Islam immediately after the father of the girls lodged an FIR, the officer said.

Social worker Agnes Kharshiing demanded that all the police personnel who helped Islam to escape from custody be arrested for abetting in rape.
