Ranjit Giri escaped with handcuff after pleading with the escort party to stop the vehicle to allow him to ease himself by the roadside, Superintendent of Police Varun Kumar Sinha said.
Giri fled when he was taken to jail after production before a court in connection with a rape case lodged against him three days ago, he said.
Raids were being carried out to nab Giri who had allegedly raped a widow on Sunday last.
