Rapper The Jacka was killed in a shooting which happened in East Oakland earlier this week.

The 37-year-old rapper, whose real name is Dominic Newton, was shot by an unidentified gunman along MacArthur Boulevard by 94th Avenue at around 8:14 PM on February 2, reported Rolling Stones magazine.

Oakland Police said cops found The Jacka suffering from a gunshot wound when they arrived at the scene. The rapper was treated there before being rushed to a local hospital, where he was later pronounced dead.

No arrest has been made until yesterday morning. Police did not provide any further details.

A man named Reggie Grant, who claimed he was The Jacka's friend, said the rapper was shot when he was rapping with friends in a van.

"Bullets don't have no name. I don't now who did it. He had problems with nobody. He'd give you his shoes off his feet. He gave jobs to lots of people," Grant said.

The Jacka debuted in 1999 with the group Mob Figaz. In 2001, he began releasing solo albums including "Jacka of the Mob Figaz", "Tear Gas" and most recently "What Happened to the World."

Some hip-hop artists paid tribute to The Jacka on social media.

Wu-Tang Clan's member Raekwon tweeted, "RIP the jacka, had a chance to meet him & record some joints, my condolences to his family & friends."

Russell Simmons posted on Facebook, "Sad to hear 'The Jacka' has passed away. Very talented guy, may he rest in peace.
